About the Organisation

Danila Dilba Health Service is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation providing culturally-appropriate, comprehensive primary health care and community services to Biluru (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) people in the Yilli Rreung (greater Darwin) region of the Northern Territory.

The mission of DDHS is to improve the physical, mental, spiritual, cultural and social wellbeing of its clients through innovative comprehensive primary health care programs that are based on the principles of equity, access, empowerment, community self-determination and inter-sectoral collaboration.

About the Opportunity

With 5 clinics, over 20 GPs and planned growth in the near future, Danila Dilba now has an exciting leadership opportunity for a Clinical Director to join their team, based in Darwin. This is a full-time position commencing 1st July, 2017 on a 3 year contract, with an option to renew. 

As an integral part of the senior leadership team and reporting to the CEO, the Clinical Director is primarily responsible for ensuring services and day-to-day operations of a diverse range of clinical functions are delivered with maximum efficiency and effectiveness and in line with DDHS strategic priorities, policies and procedures. In addition, the Clinical Director plays a key role in the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical health services to improve the standard of care and achieve improvements in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes. 

More specifically, some of your daily contributions will include:

  • Providing contemporary leadership and ensure a high level of coordination / integration across the Health Services function which is comprised of a range of programs (e.g. alcohol and other drugs, social and emotional well-being, smoking; care coordination; chronic disease management; diabetes; pharmacy); health clinics; a diverse health workforce; and variety of health systems (e.g. Communicare, Medicare, Research and Continuous Quality Improvement);
  • Monitoring clinical activities and developing/implementing a review and evaluation framework to ensure services are routinely evaluated, and regular stakeholder surveys are undertaken and acted upon;
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships and partnerships within DDHS, relevant Territory and federal Government and health sector networks, forums and practitioners; and
  • Collaborating with the Leadership Team to effectively manage organisational change and ensure a constructive organisational culture.

To be successful in this position it is essential that you are a General Practitioner with AHPRA registration and the legal right to live and work in Australia. You will have a demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and their issues and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, Aboriginal history and culture. 

Leading a team of 5 direct reports and overseeing approximately 30 GPs and a total team of more than 100, it is essential that you have extensive strategic and clinical leadership skills at a senior level in accredited healthcare operations, public health or multidisciplinary clinical practices with the ability to manage change, human resources, finances, risks and projects.

This role requires an individual with demonstrated leadership capabilities and would be well-suited to an experienced Senior Medical Officer looking to take the next step up in their career, or an experienced GP with post-graduate studies in public health, business or similar looking for a new opportunity.

  • Ability and preparedness to obtain a Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card)
  • Current driver’s license (desirable)
  • Current First Aid Certificate or preparedness to gain one within six months of commencement
